Madrona Institute: Interpretive Center

Madrona Institute is designed as a center for international conflict resolution. The institute is meant to be a neutral site where international dignitaries can meet and discuss foreign issues. The Interpretive Center is a place of reception within the secure compound of Madrona that educates visitors and orients them with the rest of the institute with large views to the entire site. The Interpretive Center acts as the base where all other functions of Madrona branch off.

The site is located on San Juan Island overlooking False Bay. The property was previously owned by the Mar Vista Resort, which had a collection of wood framed cabins and houses. The design of the Interpretive Center and other buildings within the Institute are driven by a conscious effort to adaptively reuse as much existing material as possible. Wood paneling and framing members are used to echo the existence of the previous structures as an example of progressive and environmentally respectful design.
