DESIGN IS FUCKING CHEAP AND CALENDAR IS FREE

In today’s world of crowdsourced creativity, designers are finding their intrinsic values challenged and diminished daily as their roles are often perceived by others as little more than to “prettifying” things.

This calendar is a way for 12 designers to reflect, express and make sense of the disposable nature of their work and profession.

How long is too long to wait to get paid? For many clients it’s never long enough. What is going on in their minds? Theft disguised as accounting. We love what we do. We love getting paid. Pay up or fuck off.

Once, I met an attractive client… Though I can handle our relationship well at the beginning, I started to get headaches and feel frustrated with her uncontrollable behaviors. All these sudden and unpredictable emotions turned her into a monster, as she constantly yells and screams for no apparent reason. I wonder if she could ever be a normal person again? …Perhaps, we’re better off without each other.

Design is a shape-sorting experience, just like infants match their first blocks into the right shape. Designers address the right elements by sorting out the most appropriate design solution for different client’s need. But then clients act like bullies and knock the game to the floor, laughs, and walk away.

Puppies are fun, wild and eager to explore. It’s the owners’ desire to train their puppies to obey and to do whatever they’d asked.

Clients and bosses might think that they are owners, but we never said we were dogs.

OCTOBER BY HANNAH CHU

Confession November: It can happen to anyone, at one time or another… designers do run out of ideas, it’s forgivable. Amen.
