This is my fifth semester project on the topic of domestic water supply and how to raise awareness. My approach on that was to show actual water consumption - without evaluation - in daily units to remain comprehensible for the user. Water meter are found in every home, but they are completely adapted to the specific needs of the supplier. With this Project i wanted to hit the needs of both, the supplier and the user.
Smart water meter is digital, metering consumption with a simple inductive counter instead of a complex mechanical counter. The data is stored on a small server transmitting it via wireless LAN to various devices. Other sensors e.g. in the toilet or washing machine can add data to achieve full transparency.
Meter and server are powered by energy harvesting, a small dynamo converts the water pressure (potential energy) into electrical energy. A rechargeable battery provides a stable power supply in case of high current load or longer absence. Thanks to that the smart water meter operates independently of any mains supply.
