This is my fifth semester project on the topic of domestic water supply and how to raise awareness. The aim of this project is to visualise water consumption in a transparent, comprehensible manner. Water meter are found in every home, but they are completely adapted to the specific needs of the supplier. With this project I wanted to account the needs of both, the suppliers and the consumer.
 
The smart water meter is digital and measures the consumption digitally via a hall effect sensor. The data is stored on a small server transmitting it via wireless LAN to various devices. Other sensors e.g. in the toilet or washing machine can add data to achieve full transparency.
 
Meter and server are powered by energy harvesting, a small dynamo converts the water pressure (potential energy) into electric energy. A rechargeable battery provides a stable power supply in case of high current load or longer absence. Therefore, the water meter can be operated independently and without additional infrastructure.

Form
In order to keep the most important information accessible at any times there is an energy efficient e-paper display showing total consumption in m³ and daily consumption in litres. To protect the electronics from mousture and condensate it is sealed against the display glass. As an additional protection against condensate there is an insulating shell made of PE foam. 
 
 
Interface
Mobile devices offer the possibility to display a lot of information in an easy, almost playfully way. I used that and transfered the main complexity into mobile apps (video dummy). Displaying total consumption, daily consumption, pressure and a diagram of the consumption history alongside with external informations (Water analysis, water supplier, news, infographics).
