Dhaari - Contemporary Maheshwari

This Diploma project was sponsored by Rehwa Society; a non profit organization set in Maheshwar way back in the year 1978.It was established by Mr. Richard Holkar and his ex-wife Mrs.Shalini Holkar in response to the need to revitalize this cottage industry which had declined over a period of time. Handloom weaving in Maheshwar has an ancient history dating back more than 1500 years. The current tradition owes its resurgence to Maharani Ahilybai Holkar , who ruled the state of Indore from 1765 to 1795, and it was under her patronage that the weavers prospered.

Maheshwari's are known for being very fine textiles and for their innumerable variations in the checks and stripes. Play of colour with very fine checks has always been a specialty of the Maheshwaris. Keeping this in mind this collection was done making it more bold in order to contemporarize the craft. New possible textures and yarn combinations were used.
Dent gaps introduced to make the fabric sheer and light.
