The conservation of Our Lady of Lourdes
Unknown author, 19th Ct., oil on canvas (129.5 cm x 192.5 cm)
The painting Our Lady of Lourdes belongs to the church of the Holy Name of Jesus / Holy Name of Mary in Postinje Gornje, a small village in the hinterlands of Split. It was once attached (glued) to the wooden ceiling of the church. When the church was redecorated in 1980s, the painting was stripped from the ceiling, rolled face inwards and stored in the basement of a nearby house.

I was entrusted with the conservation of this badly damaged painting in November 2006. The conservation treatment was a part of the fourth-year course I teach, Conservation and Restoration of Easel Paintings and Polychromed Wood. Over a period of five years, 15 conservation students took part in the project. The project was completed in January 2012.
