John Chamberlain - Crafting Art from Found Objects

An art curator who owned Clark Fine Art in Southampton, NY, Troy Buckner transitioned into a career as a private dealer in 2010. Troy Buckner divides his time between Southampton and Manhattan, procuring pieces created by John Chamberlain, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein.

The artist behind Shortstop, a masterpiece made from found objects, John Chamberlain was an Indiana native, who lived his final days in New York. Crafting vibrant sculptures from discarded automobile parts, he enjoyed abstract expressionism. He found inspiration from artists like Vincent van Gogh and Richard Stankiewicz, and later played a pivotal role in shaping the works of Nancy Rubins and Frank Stella. In fact, Stella’s later works, consisting of paintings and sculptures, highlight many characteristics exhibited by Chamberlain.

Chamberlain’s first solo exhibition was in Chicago in 1957, with another following a year later in New York’s Davida Gallery on Fifth Avenue. It was not until 1964 that his work received recognition abroad, at the Venice Biennale.
