«Two main factors contributed to the rise in importance of the record sleeve. First, the arrival of the LP record in the second half of the forties meant higher prices for records, and consequently more luxurious presentation. Secondly, the spread of the self-service system ade the record sleeve increasingly indispensable as an advertising medium andmarketing aid. More and more the sleeve came to be relied on to attract attention and supply the necessary information; and today it is almost always the visual appeal the initial contact with the article for sale. The attractions of the cover induce the customer topick out the record, to hear it, or buy it straight away. Again, when choosing a present (and records, like books, are popular gifts) the donor is often decisively influenced by the design of the sleeve, for the gift itself, the round black disc, is visually absolutely neutral.»
Kurt Weidemann - Ebook jackets & record sleeves, 1969

From the theoretical discussion presented in the last class, which exploredrelationships between musical discourse and practice of photography, it is intended that the student develops a project that explores this same dialog. The first part isasked to sign two photos (front and back cover of a music album) that serve to illustrate one of the selected songs. In the second part of the project the student musttake ownership of one or several images, to build only two pictures (front and back cover of a music album) that serve to illustrate the same theme selected in the first part of the project.
