Making sushi at home (a visual cookbook)

Making sushi at home is my final year project at University. It is a visual recipe book, by simply recognisable icons and graphics you can make delicious sushi without reading hundreds of words.

Introduction: Since the beginning of recorded time, humans have been using pictures to communicate with each other. The Sumerians used pictographs for record-keeping purposes, and Egyptians used hieroglyphics to capture their history. My previous research was about to explore the hidden meanings behind colour and symbols, in order to better facilitate successful cross cultural communication. Symbols are one of the best communication tools that we have to overcome many languages and cultural barriers. Based on my research, I present a visual cooking book Making sushi at home, which translates recipes into easy-to-follow infographics.

Central proposition: Cookbooks are commonly known as complex and difficult to replicate due to its lengthy text based instructions. The concept of Making sushi at home is a cookbook which short on words, big on graphics. It is a visual recipe book, by simply recognisable icons and graphics you can make delicious sushi without reading hundreds of words.

Aim: Making sushi at home is for all non-professional cooks at home who have little knowledge of cooking. More importantly, people around the world could easily understand and follow the recipe regardless their culture and language backgrounds due to its minimal use of text. The design of this particular book should turn sushi-making into a light-hearted and easy-to-follow process to all the home cooks. In the meantime, this book could act as an example of utilising infographics to describe step-by-step instructions instead of text, and make the end user experience a lot easier when people reading a recipe book or other manuals.
