Trancoso, Bahia, Brasil
Jan 2012
Thisused to be a very quiet, calm and charming little fishing village onthe Brazilian coastline. When Europeans first discovered Brazil inthe year 1500, this was literally one of the first places they saw. The village was the built around that time, and has remained so eversince, only a few homes and a small church overlooking the sea (Brazil´s 2 ndCatholic Church ) within a rectangular field known as ``TheQuadrado``.
Whena few nomadic hippies first discovered its unique allure in the1970s, Trancoso began its first slow steps of modern change. Hippiesfrom various parts of the globe lived in total harmony together withthe native fisherman and their families for many years. But then itcame, Capitalism, hungry for the amazing deserted beaches. Trancosois much larger now and I only hope that its charm, as well as thegood humor of the natives, can remain untouched. I have faith that``The Quadrado`` and its simple beauty will survive, protected byUNESCO as a World Heritage Site. For years, Trancoso was a secrethiding place of those in the know. People like Naomi Campbell, ThePrince of Whales, Leonardo di Caprio and many more like them, havebeen sneaking away to Trancoso to escape from the hectic ``RealWorld``.
Selfish me hopes that Trancoso will remain ahideaway out of the public spotlight.
