The following images record some of the process of actually building this guitar as a 3D model. It's a 1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom.
I started with the body of the guitar since everything would eventually be attached to it.
The next part built was the neck.
In this image you can see the reference images in place. They are photographs of the actual guitar.
The frets have been added and the neck and body were tweaked.
I add the hardware. I started with the pick ups.
A little better shot of the pick ups.
The bridge work went in next and I started playing around with texturing and lighting. This was one of the first renders.
The pick up toggle, pick guard, machine heads, volume and tone controls, strap pegs and the mother of pearl inlays are all added in here
The truss rod cover and the beginnings of the cable jack are added.
The cable jack is finished and the strings are added. The model is done and I do my first render. It's a little blotchy yet but I am just learning the modo rendering engine at the time this was done.
A detailed shot of the body. There's actually still a flaw in the guitar at this point. Can you spot it?
