Happy Healthy School
Graduation project in Shanghai, CN
Co-researchers: Brendan Bakker & Michiel Kulik
Air quality in primary schools is usually very bad. The main reasons are that installations are expensive and that classrooms are very dense populated. In the research for our bachelor thesis we used a greenhouse as a solution for this problem.
To find an extreme situation, we did our research in Shanghai, China. Because of pollution and the high amount of construction sites, the air in this city is so smoggy that people are wearing masks for their mouth.

We designed a school with a green house on the roof. Plants clean air in different zones with different capabilities. The inside air circulation is a semi-closed system, only filtered air is distributed to the classrooms.
In shanghai most buildings are constructed in concrete, but this school is designed in laminated bamboo. A local material that is not used much in contemporary building construction.
In 2010 our project we were asked to present our graduation project at the Shanghai world EXPO, during the 'Dutch sustainable pioneers' day in the Dutch Pavilion. After successful meetings and a great presentation, we were awarded the 'Holland knowledge inc. Encouragement award' by the initiators of the event. Also goodbaby group, the winner of the main award, offered us their prize money.
