Providing care to an individual living with Alzheimer’s disease can be a difficult task that is both physically and emotionally draining. In order to best serve the interests of a loved one dealing with Alzheimer’s, caregivers should adhere to a few basic tips. The first and arguably most important step involves self-care. Caregivers cannot forget to feed themselves, sleep and rest, exercise, and continue living their own lives to whatever degree possible. Similarly, caregivers must establish their own network of support. Whether a primary caregiver needs to take a day off or simply vent their frustrations to someone who understands, the more people involved in supporting a person with Alzheimer’s, the better.

Of course, life changes considerably when a family member or close friend is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Individuals should build their caregiving skills as soon as possible. This process can include learning about the disease and its symptoms, entering into various Alzheimer’s communities, and testing out various safety measures throughout a living space. Finally, preemptive actions can greatly reduce day-to-day stress. Any and all financial or medical matters that can be handled ahead of time should be, allowing caregivers to reduce some of the stress.
