The Contest

"Piemonte Visual Contest" is a competition to collect and implement visualization proposals based on public data, concerning the activities of the Regione Piemonte. The target was tell the story of Piemonte by leveraging public data heritage.

"Piemonte-Ski" is a web site created with Alice Teruzzi, to display public data regarding the skiing activity in the Piemonte Region. To do that, we compared the statistical data of tourism, with the conditions of the snow in the ski resorts.
Scrolling dataset

We presented the data in an HTML5 web page, with the aid of Java Script animations.
The technique used is called "Parallax scrolling", an innovative technique of computer graphics to produce websites with a strong emotional impact. The parallax effect consists in background images that move slower than the foreground images, creating a vivid illusion of movement and depth, similar to the 3D depth.

We used the technique of parallax scrolling to engage the user navigation experience, through a unique layering of animated images and storytelling.

As the user scrolls the page, a virtual downhill run is animated while at the same time presenting the statistical data.
Data interaction

Not all of the data collected appear automatically as you scroll. A lot of information was distributed at various points on the page. The user has to click them to open balloons, images or info-graphics that contain the information.
Piemonte skiing map

An example is the Piemonte map. This is the representation of all the "winter sport areas" present in the region, and the pop-up opens only by clicking on the location map.
Fineo infoghrapic

At the end of the web page, the user arrives at an info-graphic that summarizes the main fact that the site tries to convey: the relationship between visitors and snow depth.
