The Tesla is a brand of vehicle everyone at Bomper would love to own for its prestige, technological advancements and environmental benefits. Unfortunately none of us can afford one, so the closest we could get was to develop an in-house project highlighting the top of the range Tesla Model S PD85. The idea began with finding a way we could show off the car’s insanely quick ‘Ludicrous Mode’, which enables the vehicle to reach 0 to 60mph in 2.8 seconds.

The initial concept was to show a modified Top Fuel dragster sitting at traffic lights, with a family of four sitting in it looking at the Tesla Model S. We felt this had too much of a negative, envious feel, and thought that seeing the Tesla’s image reflected in the form of a dragster would better highlight the car’s speed. After trying out different backplates and environments, we ultimately chose to reflect the Tesla on a chrome petrol tanker truck. Not only would it reflect perfectly, and give us a much faster scene, but it also gave the added benefit of playing on the environmental aspect of the Tesla.

We took our Tesla model and placed it on a perfect road backplate and reflective sphere from MAGROUND, then matched camera and lighting. We then built an oil tanker and shaped it to give the best reflection surface possible to show off the dragster. We rendered out several versions to separate the different elements so that we could composite them together in Photoshop, where we also added some motion blur, bloom and lens flare for a final touch.
As we had a few backplates stocked up we also decided to place the car into several scenes to test our abilities in areas such as reflective caustics, which ultimately allowed us to create and refine the effect of light bouncing off of the Tesla’s paintwork and distorting realistically. Utilising 360 photography and backplates in a 3D environment means that we can place any product in any scenario or location at a fraction of the cost of practical photography, especially within the automotive industry.
