Brickclay from surrey - fossil rich wealden clay
I made these 5 sculptures in 2006/7 at Camberwell College as part of a residency after finishing my degree.  The clay is one of my favourite clays, it came from a brickyard called Clockhouse works in sussex which has now unfortunately closed down.  Weald Clay is a Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rock underlying areas of South East England. It varies from orange and grey in colour.  The clay I used for these is grey until it is fired when it turns a lovely orange.  I added minerals and slips to the surface to encourage a range of colouring.

The five sculptures could represent myself and my four brothers.  I made them as a celebration for my first class degree and in thanks for the amazing years I spent at Camberwell following a long held dream to go to art college.

This spot has now become a popular place to sit, picnic and watch cambridge life go by.
