The new Gallery will provide the following: permanent and temporary exhibition spaces for the Butler Gallery including the Tony O’Malley Gallery, an Education Studio; Restrooms and Administration facilities.

Reception: The foyer sets the tone and is the window to the gallery. A place that is inviting and connects the city to the exhibition spaces within.

GALLERY 1 will house the Butler Gallery collection of works by the late Tony O’Malley, one of the most important Irish artists of the twentieth century, and include a substantial gift of O’Malley works to the Butler Gallery from his estate.

Gallery 2 will provide temporary exhibition space a platform for presenting the best of Irish art, along with demonstrating a strong commitment to presenting work by artists of international repute.

Concept:
Landscape:
A form that merges into the natural landscape and rises above the ground that acts as a beacon and counterpoint to Kilkenny castle.

Connecting:
Perched on an elevated site the proposed gallery reaches out to Kilkenny city. A cantilevered gallery space frames a panoramic view of the city. The raised gallery allows the gallery entrance courtyard flow down to the River Siur.

Movement:
The ‘Cork screw’ circulation tower pThe ‘Cork screw’ circulation tower provides a smooth transition through the various gallery with views of the city and river.
