Loretta Itri's profile

The Book of Mormon's Continued Success

Loretta Itri is the Executive Vice President of Global Health Sciences and Regulatory Affairs at The Medicines Company in Parsippany, New Jersey. When she is not overseeing clinical activities at the company, Loretta Itri, an avid theater fan, enjoys taking in both Broadway and off-Broadway performances.

In 2011, The Book of Mormon, a religious satire written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, began its Broadway run. More than four years later, the production has logged nearly 1,910 performances, a number only 34 musicals have eclipsed. Despite Parker and Stone being relative newcomers to the theater, their experience as satirical writers paid major dividends among both first-time theatergoers and the avid theater crowd.

At the 2011 Tony Awards, The Book of Mormon took home nine awards, three short of the all-time record. Among those awards were Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress (Nikki M. James) in a Featured Role in a Musical, and Best Book of a Musical. Parker joined Tommy Tune and Harvey Fierstein as one of few individuals to win awards in four different categories while becoming the only person to do so for the same production.
