Ganfield Gymnasium Signage Typography

ABOUT PROJECT:

When I began working at Carroll University in April 2014, I was awed by the historical buildings on campus like Main Hall, Rankin Hall and, of course, Ganfield Gymnasium. On a walk around campus, I realized the building, constructed in 1923, was scared by a sun bleached, plastic plaque above the front door. After inquiring about the plaque, the president of the university charged me to fix the problem with a new, historically-accurate execution.
BEFORE
The photo on the left above shows the Ganfield Gymnasium entrance as it appeared with the small plastic plaque. The sign once read "Ganfield Gymnasium" but was so sun bleached that it was only functioned as an eyesore. Built in 1923, the building falls on Waukesha Historical Preservation lists, so the new signage needed to be historically accurate. After scouring the archives, we learned that the building probably never had a name above the entrance, which limited an easy historical recreation. Instead we looked for clues on the building.  I discovered a small corner stone that contained aletter 'A' and 'D'. These two letters alone served as inspiration for the typography below.
