HELSINKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

This project follows the standards of the international architectural competition for the design of the Central Library of Helsinki, opened in 2012 and is ongoing. The construction space is located in the center of Tοolonlahti city and will be a section for the Parliament Building, the Helsinki Music Center, the Filandia Hall, the Sanoma House and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art.
Τhe initial idea is the location of the basic volumes at the plot's edges, creating a central square. This led to the seperation of the uses in these two different volumes by placing the main library functions in the taller volume and in the other the auditorium which works foe cinema, theatre and lectures. In addition the project designed by the idea of a public space in which the visitor can go up to the roof without necesserily entering the main entrance of the library. So, a giant staircase was created above the auditorium, a plateau sculpture which works as a passage, a stop and a gathering space for the residents. This staircase leads to the highest point of the building that the visitor can approach which is the roof of the central collection, whrere there are seats and green spaces giving the opportunity to the visitor to rest and enjoy the view of the city.
This is a  multimediac hub for cultural encounters on human scale. People meet inside the library, at the cinema, at the internal square, on the staircase, on the roof.
Having the children’s books in a separated floor, which is the children’s world, the main collections includes 150.000 books, including newspaper and magazines as well as the music collection. The design of the libraries, located on the third floor, creates two stripes, one opposite of the other, which in their design includes the silent spaces. Between these stripes, tables and reading furniture are surrounded.
The materials used are metal and architectural concrete. The main volume of the library was overlaid by metal panels, while the secondary designed by architectural concrete. Thus, is given the feeling of a rock overlappted by something lighter, the metal.
The roof of the third floor, which is the end of the visitor’s route climbing this great staircase, includes green areas with low planting, as well as skylights, which are used not only for providing adequate lighting in the library space, but also function as seats.
