In this project, the brief was to design a concept for a luxury food item's packaging. The packaging had to exhibit a strong brand and consistent style, and had to be an ongoing development piece.
I initially found the concept of doing a multi-product pull apart style package interesting. In particular, it allowed me to experiment with the package shape and also how the substrate and artwork might be applied. My early concepts all came back to this idea.
My first attempt was a cylinder style package that was split into four quadrants. I really liked this idea of a shared package, but found the cylinder form didn't allow for interesting experimentation, and that the individual canisters would have an odd triangular shape. However, this design gave me some really strong ideas for my brand execution.
I briefly experimented with rectangular packaging. This was appealing because it would be easy to stack, however again the execution simply wasn't very interesting or exciting. At this stage, I started experimenting with the package design in 3D.
I really liked the idea of a tapered octagon, and after some early mockups I settled on a design I liked. The substrate package would contain individual packets for each flavour of the product. The customer could open each flam individually, or expand them all.
I kept with the coloured segment style, and created both 4-product and 8-product variants; 4OURSNACK and 4OURSNACK deluxe.
While the brief didn't call for a finalmodel, it was interesting to assemble the piece and interact with it. When fully opened the package is an interesting table piece, and closed it is subtle and appealing.
