Matter & Matter Vintage wooden furniture project, 2011
by SWBK (design studio SWNA+BKID)
From when the SWBK design studio first opened, I worked as an product designer for 8 months.
I participating in many design projects for the Matter and Matter furniture brand, and in particular I participated
in a project to design sustainable furniture that was manufactured using discarded wood material from Indonesia.
‘what are the elements that regulate a chair?’
The goal of the project was to design the most simple standard chair design for the furniture company Matter and Matter. It was necessary to create a design thatrepresented our brand that was also both minimalistic and easy to produce.
We attempted to design a chair infused with visual implications that symbolized what everyone could consider to be the very definition of a beautiful and basic chair.
By starting the design based on the thinking that the core characteristics of a chair are not a result of its front side or top side image, but of its profile image and form, We decided to design a chair that included a design that interpreted the beauty of the sideline of a chair into its most essential form.
By researching the sideline profiles that were representative for each brand and also the unique profile sideline of Matter and Matter’s own chair designs, a sideline with a most ideal beauty was derived. By emphasizing the design of this sideline as a design that seemingly extends in a long fashion, its was further emphasized. This made it easy to produce these chairs out of wooden boards.
We also created designs for the 1 person lounge chair, which was an extension of the basic form of the normal chair, and also the 3 person lounge chair.
While most sofas take the form of a wooden frame that encapsulates cushioning, to emphasize the design characteristics that gave an impression of the beautiful side having been extruded, this exposes its cushion towards the outside surfaces of the sofa.
And this creates a unique presence that had not yet been seen before.
