Week 9: Fathers and Sons

In "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence", many contrasting themes are explored. One central theme to the entire story line, and possibly even to the motivation behind this book, is the father-son dynamic on display between the narrator and his son, Chris. There is an incredible contrast between Chris and his father, and all fathers and sons, that makes this seemingly natural relationship one of the most difficult to navigate.

Father-son relationships are seen frequently in popular rhetoric, and can especially be used to elicit emotional reponses. In many works, writers and characters are exploring, living, thinking, and creating in a certain way because they are motivated by this relationship. It drives them to learn, and to teach. To understand, and explain. To care, and be cared for. Herein lies the contrast.

Despite the name, father-son relationships exists in many forms, not always dictated by biological kinship. But when relationships are built on these key factors, the audience can easily understand, relate to, and appreicate them. Rhetoricians use these relationships to share some of their most poignant and touching work, because the backdrop of this relationship is universal.
