Man and the Biosphere: Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve

In 2015 the SA Mint released the world’s first coin series dedicated to the UNESCO Man And Biosphere (MAB ) initiative. Launched in 1971, MAB promotes the sustainable use of natural resources through the practice of socio-ecological land management to the benefit of both man and nature. The Man and the Biosphere: Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve (KBR) coin series consists of two R2 (1/4oz) pure gold coins and two R2 sterling silver coins, each featuring different aspects of the KBR. Breinstorm conceptualised a comprehensive integrated marketing communications solution that included packaging, collateral, online promotion and the product launch event.
For the launch set packaging we sourced natural cork from sustainably managed Portuguese cork forests where the local
industry supports the preservation of grassland forests and biodiversity, and helps to sustain local small-scale agriculture and fast-disappearing cultural traditions. The accompanying booklet is a conceptual depiction of biosphere reserves. It is divided into three sections, each resembling the essence of the biosphere reserve concept, which is about the combination of three complementary functions: conservation, sustainable development, and logistical support. Inspired by the KBR’s native fynbos and the different biosphere zones, we created a concentric circle motif as a unifying design element on both the packaging and the collateral. For print and online media promotion we developed a striking visual relationship between image (depicting different aspects of the KBR) and text, that symbolises the interaction between man and biosphere.
An integral part of sustainability is to provide for the needs of future generations of life on the planet. Education is key to communities’ understanding of the benefits and management of the biosphere model. We created an entertaining educational video in a bold graphic style, aimed at informing children about the importance of biospheres in ensuring a livable future.

The coin series was launched at an auspicious event held at the Waterkloof Wine Estate, overlooking the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. MC, Jo-anne Strauss, wore a garment and headpiece embellished with local flora. Guests enjoyed a delicious menu inspired by the beauty and abundance of the KBR incorporating locally sourced ingredients and wines.
