Lucidchart Documents Redesign
Lucidchart Documents Redesign

A user experience case study for Lucid Software.

I. Research

For my first project at Lucid Software I was challenged to redesign the Documents page. This page is the central hub for users to create, manage, and share their documents. It receives upwards of 30,000 visits per day. Analytics, heat maps, and customer interviews informed the new design. Data analysis proved that customers rarely used the right-side panel, but instead spent most of their time dealing with the thumbnails themselves.

II. Design

I used Sketch to create the high fidelity designs for the project. The design process took place over several weeks as I met with customers, project managers, and other stakeholders to refine each iteration. As the design took shape, I quickly transitioned to rapid prototyping.

III. Prototype

Prototyping in HTML/CSS/JS on Codepen has several advantages. First, live prototypes are indispensable when trying to sell animation and interaction. Keynote, After Effects, and other animation tools can't come close. Second, it's automatically hosted for me to share with any customer or colleague to review. Lastly, the code I wrote gave the engineers a good head start on front-end development.

IV. Results

The new design was monitored on a 50/50 A/B test. The new design saw a 15% increase in first time payments, and a 22% increase in payment per user. The additional revenue over the next year is expected to be $230,000.
