MOMA lecture posters inspired by Louise Fili

MOMA Poster 1
I chose to design my poster inspired by Louise Fili because I studied her this week for the discussion post, and I really liked her body of work and her style.  For this poster, I was inspired by one of her book covers that is red with a gold trim and gold embellishments.  It also has a unique type with lines added for a hand-drawn effect.  I also like Fili’s use of script and of art deco type that was popular in the 1920s, and in metropolitan cities like New York and Chicago.  Since the lecture is about drawing with sound, I thought the swirl embellishments were fitting because you can almost see them dancing across the page.  I also chose the hand-written style typeface because it is a lecture on drawing, so the hand-drawn type seemed fitting for the scope of the assignment as well.   If I had the chance to go back and work on this some more, I would have incorporated even more embellishments, as well as adjust the slope of the words so they were not on a perfect horizontal line.  I would also probably hand-draw the MOMA logo as well, but I didn’t want to change it too much or use a different type than their own, because it is their logo.

MOMA Poster 2
I chose to design my poster inspired by Louise Fili because I studied her this week for the discussion post, and I really liked her body of work and her style.  For this poster, I was inspired by one of her book jacket covers that has a black and white pattern with a red trimmed text box, and large, bold art deco inspired type.  I was really drawn towards Fili’s use of art deco type and graphic design styles that was popular in the 1920s, and in metropolitan cities like New York and Chicago.  MOMA is in New York, so I thought it would be fitting to pay homage to the art deco style in this design.  Also, since the lecture is about drawing with sound, I chose a colorful pattern that resembles sound waves so mimic Fili’s use of a patterned background, and to tie in with the theme of the lecture – drawing with color and sound.  I found a couple different styles of art deco inspired type, one more decorative for the lecture title, just as Fili used a more embellished type for her book title and author.   If I had the chance to go back and work on this some more, I would have probably looked for a background that wasn’t so busy, or made my own.  While I felt it was good for the scope of the assignment, it’s so loud; it is a little distracting to me.
