The American Dream of Ralph Lauren

I chose to create a book cover on Ralph Lauren because of the influence that the brand has had on my life over the last 5 years.  Ralph Lauren is an American lifestyle brand that caters to many demographics.  Everyone knows the brand but not about the man behind the polo pony. I decided to put a black and white profile picture of him on the front cover to give readers an idea of who Ralph really is. In many of Ralph Lauren’s store locations you will find pictures of him with a black and white background which is his image throughout full retail stores and locations. When we think of a designer we picture them to be very well dressed, for Ralph it’s very fitting for him to be in a classic suit and standing in an intellectual pose. I wanted to keep a white background because most of Ralph’s advertisements also have a white, navy and black background or image scheme. I added a little inner glow to the background of the text for the front cover because it brought some brightness to part of that front image of him.  For the Text font on the front I wanted to incorporate an American flag into the title because it reflects his brand identity of being the American Designer.  The clipping mask image for the title was a bright American flag which intrigues readers to understand his brand even more.  In addition I used the stroke technique with this text and kept all fonts to Avenir Henry oblique which gives a classic font structure to the RL brand. I kept the white font on the front for my title name because I did not want to distract the clipping mask image font since it was the main piece of the front cover.  For the spine text, it was important to maintain consistency with the font color and text so I kept it the same to keep that brand identity with the overall cover.  I used a light navy blue for my last name just to add some color to the spine. I used the Vogue logo for the publisher because this is a book about the design industry.  Vogue is one of the most popular fashion publishing companies in the world but also I because I was unable to find a Rizzoli Company logo which is a company Ralph has used in the past for publications. The white cover looks great on both the front and back cover because there is a black and white image on the front and then a landscape background on the back.  The landscape on the back is a picture Ralph Lauren’s property in Colorado Springs.  I thought it was important to include this landscape on the cover because many people do not know he has a love for nature. Everyone just views him as this New York Billionaire but he’s a man of many different passions and qualities.  I thought the ranch was the best representation of another part of his life because he is a family structured man.  The text font in the background gives readers a vintage feel has they notice that the font has been lightened in the back.  Each word that is in this text reflects qualities or creations involving Lauren throughout his career.  For example, I wrote Philanthropist because he has his own Pink Pony Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation which raises awareness for Breast Cancer Research.  Other text may include, neck ties or collections that are part of his brand which made him notable in the fashion world.  The quote on the back reflects him as an individual and how he views living the American dream and not just as a designer.  I really enjoyed this project because it allowed me to take ideas from a brand that I know very well and create them into a more personal way to reach audiences unfamiliar with Ralph Lauren.
