Network Magazine

Network Magazine hired me to give them a fresh look. I did a top-to-bottom redesign, keeping things clean and simple.

The magazine’s content was highly technical, and difficult to portray photographically.

Illustration proved a great way to communicate complex ideas and bring a pop of color.

Each year, the publisher hosted a gala and presented trophies, which were actually chunks of lucite. I suggested they could do better, and could bestow an object worthy of display.

I wanted the trophy to reference the physicality of the magazine. I achieved it by creating a “cover” of aluminum, which was bent so as to be self-standing.

The form became the basis for an identifying logo, and the finished awards made for a beautifully sculptural photo on the magazine’s cover.

Typical of trade titles, Network had a very small staff. In fact, the layout of the entire magazine was tasked to the Managing Editor. So the formatting needed to be strict.

In the News&Analysis section, each story fell within one of 6 categories.

For navigation and visual interest, I hired Brian Biggs to create a bitmap-style icon for each category.
