An individual project undertaken in my second year of university. The aim of this project was to design a handtool aimed at the DIY and gardening market. The client was Bosch, so I began by investigating how their handtools are made.
I conducted research into potential target markets to gain insights about what the consumers want. From this I generated multiple concepts for a new handtool.
After selecting the best concept, the internal mechanism was designed. The main challenge for this design stage was selecting the correct motor and batteries to deliver the forces required for the handtool and for the correct lifetime between each battery charge. The final concept for the handtool was a trowel with an oscillating head that uses a jackhammer mechanism to help its user dig into tough ground more easily. The whole handtool was modelled using SolidWorks CAD software.
