This set of print media (mini-posters and a flyer) was created to promote and generate interest for an upcoming exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of Art, called “30 Americans.” The 30 Americans exhibition showcases world-class, cutting edge contemporary art created by many of the most important African-American artists of the past three decades. The goal of these posters was to attract not only the usual types of members and attendees, but also to create interest in the younger people of Hampton Roads. The concept was meant to let the art speak for itself, to the audience, in an appealing way by using vivid colors that evoke the soul of the exhibition. The layout was simple, with the primary function being to communicate the exhibition and a preview event in the most basic possible terms, and also including the free admission aspect of the Museum. Ultimately, the concept of using vivid colors was what brought the designs to life. Finally, the design itself took a specific element from the painting represented on it, and carried it into the “white space.” The flyer continued the design theme created for the mini-posters, and added, on the back, a lengthy description of the exhibition, along with other relevant details. The end result was a complementary set of designs that reflect the focus and feeling of the 30 Americans exhibition.
