The brief for this project was to produce 2 finished pieces which reflected a 'good' and 'evil' side of the same character. My overall aim was to create a character who exists within either an alternate or possible future reality, and for that world to have some key difference from our own which would affect the design of the character in some way. After watching a Television program about a police force set in an alternate reality where magic replaced science, I settled upon the idea of a world in which guns and other projectile based weapons had never been invented, leading to an alternate evolution of weapons, armour and military/law enforcement infrastructure. The initial concept sketches I came up with show a significantly different looking character than the final pieces. The earlier designs lean far more towards a traditional medieval knight in terms of the characters appearance and although I liked the design I felt that it didn’t feel like it contained enough modern elements. For the final design I tried to create a 50/50 mix of medieval knight and modern day SWAT type cop; keeping the medieval style surcoat and adopting modern kevlar type body armour. The alternative version of the character depicts a man who has gone through some sort of revelation and realised he has been fighting for the wrong side. As a freedom fighter he no longer has access to the high tech weapons and armour and has a much rougher look. Read Less

Final 'Law Enforcement' version of the character.
Final 'Freedom Fighter' version of the character.
Initial line art for the final design. Some alterations to the armour and sword were made before colouring.
Character sheet showing earlier, more traditional 'medieval' designs.
My first ideas involved a robotic police officer design, possibly with the inclusion of a canine droid companion.
Using a photograph as a template I experimented with a less stylistically proportioned character.
