Tangled [fabric silkscreen project with Todd Oldham]

This is a collection of three works focused on the inspiration of how sea horses interact with sea grass. Different from previous works, with the influence of Todd's teaching and guidance, the process of dyeing is fully challenged with a new technique of ice dyeing. This technique requires the usage of frozen dyes which creates unexpected results for the fabric. The fabric is also dyed and printed multiples times with a total of more than 30 hours of work to create the layers of colors that symbolize the mystery of the ocean. The piece in the end also led to another potential use of the fabric which is applying it in the field of apparel.

The first two prints mainly focused on capturing the feeling of water through the usage of different colors. The print on the left portrayed the ocean in a more obvious way that also showed a sense of light through the use of slightly different colors. The print on the right depicts a more mysterious part of the sea.

The third print used the innovative technique of Ice-Dyeing. In order to create a more layers of colors and portray the sense of light shining through the intertwining seagrass, I dyed the fabric and printed my pattern multiple times.
The process of dyeing my fabric
I used vibrant colors that symbolized the corals and sea horses to form a contrast with the dark color I chose to symbolize the deeper parts of the ocea.
I printed bold geometric shapes to form a resting point from the tangled patterns for the viewers
