In I Protest the Artist represents a young African woman holding an apparently sleeping child; She's a poor prostitute who needs to support her kid for the daily needs. The symbolic meaning of the Work refers to the social theme of the Poverty considered as a "calamity" affecting the human dignity until the point to hit deep inside the elementary human rights. The woman is depicted with two different eyes: The left eye seems to be at the same time tired, resigned and sorrowful: tired cause of the forced humiliating activity, resigned due to the impossibility to change life, sorrowful thanks to the awareness of being not in condition to grant a decent future to her child. The right eye is just empty, without expression, lifeless!! On the other side the child figuratively seems to ask Poverty to stop hitting them so heavily; his left hand is presented as tense and straight, like firmly indicating his non acceptance. The Artist also enters directly into the Painting imprinting a black hand above the child head: she feels the same hunger and human participation of the innocent kid: the Manifest of a sincere reaction against the injustice Painted with a pleasurable and contradictory alternation of light and dark colors, the Work present a fresh modern approach and the typical artistic identity of the Painter.
