The Raleigh Farmers Market

The Raleigh Farmers Market
A Community Study
The basis of this project was to help bridge the disconnect between the vendors working at the Raleigh Farmers Market and the surrounding community, including adults, college students, and children alike. Through interviewing various employees, both retail and wholesale, and customers, we found that there was a large amount of misunderstanding on the part of the customers. Confusion about when the market was open as well as the stories and motivations of the employees needed to be amended. Through several mood boards and annotated panoramas, we were able to discover an overall feel and message of the community as well as create a handful of design artifacts to go out to the public.

The first is an online interaction that let users read short bios about the vendors at the market in an effort to better understand why the farmers market exists. The second is recipe book system created for the purpose of getting children excited about healthy foods and giving their parents the chance to teach and have fun with their kids. Several tangible items came with the books including seeds and foldout games with which the children could interact.
It was important that we be able to visualize the social and business connections living within the market.
Through a series of "pull-tab" animations, users could hover over questions about a vendor to see the answer.
Each page contained the next step in the recipe as well as some sort of interesting fact or funny comment about the main ingredient. In this example, kids are taught how to reuse the seeds in a pumpkin after they're finished helping make a pumpkin pie.
The system was adapted so that any fruit or vegetable could be used with varying patterns and color schemes.
