Digital Paintings Exploring Thirds With Grids & Shapes

Whilst doing a job where I had to drop a grid over many… many photographs to make elements of these photographs line up on a 1/3 divided grid, it made me start to think ‘why thirds?’ why not halves or quarters? So from this question I started to explore, in little paper doodles at first, how from by simply dividing an area or shape into thirds and then by dividing these lines once again by a third – connecting them with other lines – then filling in some of these newly created areas - I would end up with a structured pattern. Taking something that is a simple shape and by dividing and then sub dividing again by a third it made it more complex, and starts to take on a 2D – 3D effect that plays with your eye.

I took my doodles into Illustrator to do more explorative work, keeping the patterns simple and in Black and White then eventually into Photoshop to start playing with colours and texture. So after months of playing and exploring this concept here, are some of my resulting pictures.

I hope you like them and enjoy.
