Time line: progress of learning calligraphy

Thoughtful and handmade gift giving is a passion of mine. A handwritten card can be one of the simplest gifts. I first tried calligraphy not knowing if I’d enjoy it. I wanted to be able to create something that seemed effortless from almost nothing but pen and paper. When the pen flows with success all the effort feels totally worth it.

As of May 2015 I've been a practicing calligrapher for 2 years. I've documented my progress becoming competent with a pointed pen. As a tool for finding my calligraphic hand and to to use as go-to warm up material I create word lists. Those practice sheets let me see where I've been.

January 2015: a new year poem.
October 2014: unusual costume ideas.
December 2013: inspired by The Night Before Christmas.
September 2013: a few months after taking my first class. This is the first word list I ceated and still warm up with on occasion.
June 2013: first practice sheets after taking my first class.
May 2013: my first shaky attempts at using the pointed pen (pictured above). First steps even before picking up the pen were becoming familiar with handwritten gothic and italic letterforms (shown below).
