These scenes were inspired by the movie Ex Machina (which is pretty recognizable)… more exactly its filming location: Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldal, Norway. The hotel/facility is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, rivers, breathtaking nature, and – hence the name – you can enjoy the view through walls made entirely of glass.
I used shots from the movie and photos of the location as reference for a little study on semi-interior scenes built and rendered entirely in Vue, which is more suitable for outdoor scenes, but was not really made for interiors. So, this was a step out of my comfort zone, but I had a lot of fun, none the less…
This scene was inspired by a room the movie. Since the building is a research facility, some rooms have no windows, but the little “garden” within the walls made the environment a little bit cozier… I found it really interesting, also a good subject for a semi-interior scene. I used two daylight portals and one light panel besides the Sunlight.
This scene was inspired by shots viewing a beautiful valley through a giant glass wall, from inside the building. But as I was working on the scene, I had a better (and more challenging) idea. So, I rather turned the building into a recreation facility with a small pool. The main interior was designed and modeled entirely in Vue, so was the exterior environment. The interior and the exterior was rendered together as one scene.
This was inspired by a similar photo of the actual hotel, viewing the room and its glass wall from the outside. While you can see the reflection of the environment pretty clearly on the wall, you can also see a bit of the interior through the glass. This is something I’ve never attempted before in Vue (and not just in Vue), but I’m quite happy with the result.
