Futile competition entries for the India Design Mark
Among few of the most important attributes to convey with this design was that it should clearly reflect the identity of Indian Design and suggest the notion of a ‘good design’. Identifying the essence of Design in the nation, which is still trying to find its particularity and had to be able to go wherever the conception of Design would eventually go – a road that has not yet been appropriately charted, I observed the flexibility as well as the constraints involved, and celebrated the most familiar presentment of the country amidst the gap of Design that has been created.
To convey the characteristics of Indian Design that reflect the distinctiveness and uniqueness of the prevailing eminence of Indian Design identity, the proposed symbol sets out a perceivable and substantial impression. Thoughts through the initial sketches played out into much more defined design that wanted to convey the notion of the symbol that defines the concept of a ‘good design’ that has been fabricated by the letter ‘M’ also amplifying the check mark between the letters ‘i’ and ‘D’. The broader approach also presented a straightforward, manageable and clear design. The simple form is also emblematic of contiguity and standard.
This design was created to convey highly the ability of Indian Design to create a mark of a new Design era and create a distinctive identity of its own. At the other end of the experimental spectrum, the idea was to explore the need of the symbol to be well defined and identifiable at a glance. What followed was a lengthy exploration on the basic Indian flag form, which carries the most common representational value. The final mark of a good design that defines and confirms the standards is also clearly suggested in the symbol.
