MARVEL FACT FILES
Marvel Fact Files is a regular partwork published by Eaglemoss Publishing, that builds into an ever-expanding encylopaedia of characters from the entire Marvel comics universe. Starting in January 2015, I worked on the project as a freelance designer, in tandem with the existing in-house team.

Each "card" is different, often characters I've never heard of before being given the text to begin work. A lot of time goes into image research, often the copy will reference storylines and frames from the pre-digital era of comics, meaning a trip to the office is needed to comb through their garagntuan stack of (neatly ordered) back issues and collected editions, in search of that one perfect frame. Usually the older comics from the 60s to the 80s need a high level of clean up in Photoshop, perhaps even recolouring under a scan of a black and white frame.

Most of the work here was in InDesign and Photoshop
Malekith - part of Thor's pantheon of characters.

Ikari - a recent foe of Daredevil, part of Chris Samnee and Mark Waid's incredible run for that character.

Angar The Screamer - another Daredevil villain, this time from the 1960s era, an ex-hippie from Haight Ashbury. To compliment the psychedelia of the character and storyline, I added a nice trippy spiral of Kirby dot graphics, using a brush created by Marvel artist Brian Denham for one of his projects:

Valkyrie, another character from Thor's neighbourhood. Lots of classic 60s era comics frames that needed scanning and retouching.

Thunderstrike, a sort of 1980s Thor replacement.

Ana Kravinoff, an opponent of Spider-Man. This card was not given a pull-quote at the time I sent it back to Eaglemoss, hence the row of XXX's.

Mechamage, an ally of Fantastic Four. Again this was not supplied a pull quote so placeholder X's are used.

MARVEL FIGURINES
Eaglemoss asked me to update some of the books published as part of the Marvel Figurines series, taking the character stories up to their current point (as of 2015). The "history" sections of these magazines are 6 pages long, so the final 2 page spread of each issue had to be reworked with new imagery and copy. Luckily, the artwork for most of these were created digitally and existed on Marvel's DAM site, so I spent most of the time creating cut outs from these high res files.
Vision - android member of the Avengers.

Spider-Man. He's been through a lot recently!

Black Widow. A huge bonus of working on these issues was reading new Marvel comics as part of the research. Phil Noto's run on Black Widow is nuanced, painterly and moody, brilliant stuff.

Ant Man. Another great one to work on and read the most recent issues.
© Marvel 2015
Red Skull, one of Marvel's most evil villiains. Top right middle you can see him holding Professor Xavier's brain that he has just removed!
© Marvel 2015
Daredevil. Always great to work with Chris Samnee's beautiful illustrations (furthest right). But all the artwork is brilliant, of course!
