Founded in 1951 as a means to assist more than one million people who were still uprooted after World War II, the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) covered more than 12 million persons in 2014 alone. This visualization attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon of flight and expulsion as a global phenomenon. The idea originated from a class project on the topic of mapping global tendencies at Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in 2008, with the UNHCR Statistical Online Population Database as the underlying data source.
