Irene Scala is a fellow typophile and graduate of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where she had the opportunity to study with educators such as Paul Rand, Lou Dorfsman, and Milton Glaser. After earning a B.F.A. from the Cooper Union, she went on to postgraduate study at The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Upon returning to New York City, she joined a multi-disciplinary design studio, creating a variety of print and web communication pieces. Close to a decade ago, Irene Scala teamed up with James Craig in teaching “Typography 1: Introduction to Typography” at The Cooper Union. Together, she and Craig created the web site DesigningWithType.com, an online resource devoted to the art and appreciation of typography. The site offers a unique typographic resource for students, educators, and professionals, showcasing talent from all over the world. Irene Scala continues to collaborate with James Craig and co-authored and redesigned the Fifth Edition of his classic textbook Designing with Type: The Essential Guide to Typography. As an online companion to the new edition, Scala and Craig created www.DesigningWithType.com/5 to provide additional information beyond the scope of the book. While working independently, Irene was recruited by Manning Publications to tackle several book projects, establishing a design standard for a new book series, as well as individual covers. Most recently, Irene joined an exciting new venture as Creative Director of Spark451, a full service marketing and communications company — a dynamic and experienced team of creative, yet practical thinkers. Irene Scala is a fellow typophile and graduate of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where she had the opportunity to study with educators such as Paul Rand, Lou Dorfsman, and Milton Glaser. After earning a B.F.A. from the Cooper Union, she went on to postgraduate study at The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Upon returning to New York City, she joined a Jakdesign, multi-disciplinary design studio, creating a variety of print and interactive communication pieces.

Close to a decade ago, Irene Scala teamed up with James Craig in teaching “Typography 1: Introduction
to Typography” at The Cooper Union. Together, she and Craig created the web site DesigningWithType.com, an online resource devoted to the art and appreciation of typography. The site offers a unique typographic resource for students, educators, and professionals, showcasing talent from all over the world.

In 2013, the James Craig and Irene Scala Designing with Type Awards were established. Each year, two Cooper Union students who demonstrate excellence in graphic design will be awarded a stipend to travel and study abroad. They will have an opportunity to hone their professional skills and engage in life-enhancing cultural experiences.
