Life is made of many experiences. Look around now. It seems more and more our ambitions are formatted and that most of us know what to expect from experiences. Life's losing its surprise. There are several moments in one's lifetime that change our personality, ambition, and sometimes define us. We may arrive at university with the ambition to learn, to teach, to grow, to find our path.
Just as your path until now cannot be copied, the university should provide a singular experience, versatile and tailored to each one of us.

Look down. The ground you stand on is precious. Saving this planet is one mission several of us are committed to. The chance to become relevant in a world salivating for change, to provide inspiration and open up a new path, a road that has not been taken.

Look up. Imagine your perfect campus. One that is designed to become a landmark, an inspiration. One that is inspired in nature, in life, in knowledge and becomes all of them.

LK AHD - A CAMPUS THAT IS ALIVE

The proposal grows from a crossroad of four paths. These paths cross at a place where the campus plaza is born. This is a dynamic center where one will be able to analyze life and it's paths. This plaza will become the cradle of the campus life and it's student's experience.
Our building was designed to provide the best place to teach and learn. To create a contemporary interior where light and space are designed to create a perfect learning environment. At the same time generating an exterior space that merges with nature and provokes life to flourish. The exterior space was planned to become a core in the experience of the Otaniemi Central Campus. Our proposal was designed looking ahead to a new era.

SYMBIOSIS

Lichens are organisms resulting of symbiotic relationship between a fungus (mycobiont) and a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont). They are pioneer colonizers and bioindicators. This characteristic is important in assessing the effects of ozone depletion, metal contamination and air pollution.
There are many different species of lichens in Finland. Our proposal explores the importance of these organisms, using symbiosis as the main concept. This symbiosis is transferred fro the concept idea to the design in order to establish a balanced and mutual beneficial relationship between people, the new buildings, green spaces, the existent buildings and the surrounding environment.
The project's shapes are inspired by the lichens morphology and structure. This morphology is reflected in the connections between buildings, pavements, green areas and exterior furniture and emphasizes the symbiosis between them and adjacent natural reserve.
