The entry experience is meant to be reminiscent of a doorway in a typical New England home.

The first set of panels explains that one of the things that makes the family in the pictures special is that their grandparent Erica is transgender. Then you the visitor are asked, "What makes your family special?" On the back, a life-size picture of one of the youngest members of the Tobias family quietly observing her family. (Photo by Matthew Clowney)

The centerpiece of the exhibit is what Matthew calls the "Grand Portrait", a digitally composited picture made up of many photographs. The effect is uncanny- the whole family is sharing space but their glances don't quite connect with one another. Each person in the picture is at once surrounded by family and having their own personal experience.
