OTHERNESS // EXPLORE THROUGH AUGMENTED REALITY

Otherness is a monthly magazine with augmented reality contents which aim is to explore spaces through their layers and unfold different truths via a new kind of storytelling that tries to shape a new form of relationship between the reader and the object book.
The setting for my project is
Chelsea College of Art and Design.
Being part of my MA final project for the summer exhibition, I thought the college to be the perfect example both practically (being it where the exhibition took place) and conceptually. Chelsea College of Arts has indeed a layered and interesting history that passes through Millbank Prison and the Royal Army Medical College to finally become part of the UAL system in 2005.
The perception we have of our role in time and space is distorced by the lack of knowledge of other perspectives and layers.
As we live a place we percieve it as ours as if inhabiting it would help us define it.
This assumption couldn't be more wrong.
Otherness makes the reader aware of his position, importance and influence as spectator and actor.
THE MAPS

Maybe the most important part of Otherness. Each map covers an historycal era and therefore a layer in the college's history.
Every map is folded so that it is possible to navigate it as if it was a small booklet, through the pages the reader can access curiosities and notions on that specific time period and on the function the building had at the time.
Once unfolded, the map portraits the college buildings and once scanned, it's possible to locate some spots related to the analyzed period. The reader is supposed to follow the map's directions, wander through the corridors and interact with the space to get in touch with other layers of history.
