POD is collaborating with WIKA on a digital experience for Esquire Magazine's Ninth-annual 'Ultimate Bachelor Pad'.
For the First Time Ever, Esquire Takes Its NYC Apartment Out of Manhattan. Premium Brands, Leading Designers and State-of-the-Art Technology Showcase 'Man at His Best' at the Exclusive ClockTower Building in DUMBO.
The Esquire Bachelor is a legend," says Brooks Atwood of POD Design. "We wanted to give him something tangible, something real—so we gave him a ghost." Atwood, an architect and industrial designer, teamed up with artist and digital designer Dana Karwas of WIKA Studio to create the Esquire Lounge, a striking space with an exoskeleton of steel, and a female spirit within.
"Living within the walls and living architecture of the Ultimate Bachelor Pad you'll find an elusive female ghost— Charlotte," explains Atwood. "She is a life-sized digital ghost who is playful and witty, always making you guess where she is going to appear next. She can be seen swimming through the atrium, relaxing inside the bar, and walking within the walls of the lounge. Charlotte provokes visitors with her beauty and mystery. She can tell when you are alone, and she visually narrates where your eyes should be with her movements."
The interactive video installation in the Esquire Lounge is a cutting-edge combination of animation, videography, interactive-sensor technology, and digital programming, directed and engineered by Karwas, who has also trained as an architect.
Giving form to the ethereal Charlotte is Margot Robbie, co-star of ABC's new series Pan Am, and one of Esquire's "Women We Love." The Australian-born actress spent a day in the video studio with Karwas and Atwood, embodying Charlotte's ghostly and mischievous moves.
