Antoine Chaya's profile

History of Napa Valley Wine Production

For nearly a decade, Dr. Antoine Chaya has served as the senior director of strategic accounts at Oracle Corporation in Redwood Shores, California. Outside of work, Dr. Antoine Chaya maintains an avid interest in wine, particularly those produced in California’s Napa Valley.

Although Napa Valley wines were not widely known until the mid-20th century, they have been produced in the area since 1848, when George Calvert Yount established Napa’s first vineyard. Other early vintners introduced different grape varietals to the valley, and by the late 19th century, more than 140 wineries were operating in Napa.

After a major slowdown in wine production due to a root louse infestation and the enactment of prohibition, Napa Valley wine producers recovered and began working together to market their products. A large number of people were introduced to Napa wines through promotional activities that started in the late 1940s.

Napa Valley’s first big moment in the spotlight, however, came in 1976, when two Napa wines were awarded top honors at the prestigious Paris Tasting. Since then, Napa Valley has been associated with world-class wines. Today, there are hundreds of wineries producing quality products in the region.
