"Step Into My Office" Book

The 46 page book “Step Into My Office, a Personal Exploration of Fearlessness” was a series of personal journal entries in regards to an experiment of facing my long time fear of surfing. Since the book was about surfing I wanted to try and capture the raw and organic nature of the sport and culture.

Through scanned imagery and original photography I was able to bring tactility to the piece as well as a sense of personal ownership. The variety of textures scattered through out the various page layouts evokes an earthy quality that one can find in the sport of surfing since so much of it is based off of what mother earth provides.
All of my designs were inspired by personal surf experiences as well as historical surf research. The layouts for every page while structured enough to be comprehendible were meant to display a kind of looseness, of ease, reflecting much of the laid-back mentality of the surf culture, as stated in my book, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being out here thus far, it’s that the ocean is heavyweight grand champion; it’s not something that can (or should) be beaten. It’s something to be revered, yes—but beaten? You’re better off showing up for the ride than the fight. “
Part of the experiment included that I completely immerse myself into the surf culture through as many activities as possible not just the act of surfing it’s self. In doing so I not only created a series of designs that would be converted to surf board art, but also photo documented me shaping an actual board from blank to finished.
