Based on my previous Phoenix Illustrations, I was commissioned to do a piece representing Arizona and the Westward Ho. The Hotel Westward Ho was once a swanky destination visited by celebrities but more recently has become a bit of a creepy landmark. Currently being used for housing the elderly and rumored to be haunted, this building serves as the perfect juxtaposition against Arizona's colorful landscapes.
I began with the concept of the typography and tower of the Westward Ho being the main focus with desert elements in the background. To achieve this I utilized many shades of green used in a monochromatic format with highlights in red and yellow. All elements are then tied together around an outline of the state. The effect is another beautiful Arizona illustration with subtle eerie tones.
