Sian Dorman's profile

Decadence in Nature.

Structural sample collection.
Seeking decadence in nature led me to the tropical Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta). The male of this species are known for their extravagantly flamboyant and conspicuous, flowing fins, vastly exaggerated in respect of their bodies. Their glistening bodies reflect opalescent and iridescent colouring. Females of the species do not have the same qualities.
Studies evoking the powdery pastel colouring with gracefully flowing fins inspired the design. The shimmering and layering scales reminiscent of encrusting, jewels and luxury. Fish: luxurious, shamelessness, encrusted, brights synthetic, expensive, plush, sumptuous Fabrics samples use frilly fringing to almost bio-mimic and emulate the sleek shape the fins make. Using hand dyed nylon cord such adds a sheen, some mix nylon with translucent plastic creating shimmer and dazzle resulting in a simple yet elegant and powerful sensory structural outcome. Visualised for fashion, jewelry and wearable art.
Samples featured in Premier Vision’s Indigo, Paris.
