The HydroGen: Transforming wave power into clean energy

In South Africa, we are consuming more energy than we can produce so it is putting a lot of pressure on the national grid. The purpose of this project was to come up with a solution that added vast amounts of clean energy back into the large scale grid to increase the amount of electricity available.

And thus, The HydroGen was created.
(Hydro= water)+(Gen= Generating)
The world is made up of 71% water which is situated all around us. More than 44% of the world’s population lives within 100km of a coastline. If we were able to harness the potential energy from the ocean, we would be able to produce 8000 Terawatts of power which is enough to power the world 5 times over.

Similar to other renewable energy sources, ocean power can vary according to weather patterns. What makes ocean power more efficient is the ability to predict the expected forecast based on wind, weather, tide, direction etc. This will be able to determine how much electricity could be created depending on the swell size, tide increase/decrease or underwater currents.
The buoy was designed with the idea of hydrodynamics in mind because of its life in the water. The idea for the buoy is to collect as much impact force as possible and at the same time move through the water swiftly when being pushed to generate more electricity. The flat face with the indents allows for more force to be collected on impact and once pushed the water will be able to run over the buoy to allow it to return to its upright position as quickly as possible.

The triangular shape on the back is inspired by the shape of a boats underbelly. this shape allows for the buoy to move through the water with less resistance and more speed creating more energy.
More than just creating energy, the HydroGen will be able to read how much energy is being produced depending on the size, speed and force of the wave. This will help to predict how much energy can be created by looking at the future swell forecast. Furthermore, it will have a live feed of information that people will be able to access on their smart phones or computers that gives them a live surf report.
Beachgoers will be able to choose where one of the HydroGen is placed and read the live feeding information it is constantly giving out as well as how much energy it is generating. Information such as the wave size, wave speeds, time intervals between waves and sets and water temperatures will all be on a constant updating feed so that it acts as a live surf forecast that would be more accurate than a predicted future forecast.
According to quazi experiments as well as vast research into Farradays Law of Induction as well as Lens's Law, it is predicted that one HydroGen device could have the potential to provide enough energy to power 223 houses in one day.

The ocean has the potential to be the biggest renewable energy source to make up most of our planet...
