Icon Design: Eye~Sign ASL

Goal - Design a standardized graphic symbol for use in a mobile app. to teach American Sign Language; the application is currently under development.  The attempt here is to provide a comprehensive, yet simple resourceful application to communicate in ASL.  The key in achieving this goal is to build an object/format that is visually familiar to the audience, yet pleasing to the observing eye making the end-user experience an enjoyable one.

American Sign Language originated in the early 19th century at the American School for the Deaf (ASD) in Hartford, Connecticut (French Sign Language (FSL) is considered to be closely related).  However, the symbol should be familiar enough for any person(s), individuals knowledgeable in the Latin/Roman (English) alphabet.

This video presentation(s) partially describes the process I used to design the first three icons of the Latin/Roman (English) alphabet…Aa, Bb, and Cc into “standardized” graphic symbols (The movies I included here are developed with Adobe Flash Professional…then converted to QuickTime.)

The first movie presents a quick systematic development process, showing steps to create the basic template of the hand.  The second .mov showcases the graphic symbols in 2D animation, while presenting an eye catching Brand/Logo.

This is the original sketch of the base-template I will use to create the 26 letters of the Latin/Roman (English) alphabet.  Known as ASL “qualifiers,” single ASL signs combined with hand/arm/body movement and facial expression will form/make complete sentences.  The use of a standardized icon symbol will assist in the development of such communiqué.  Using simple, low intensive 2D animation/motion graphics, the animated symbols will demonstrate specific hand/finger movements  to the observer.

Created in Adobe Illustrator, the .ai graphics template contains several object elements, elements easily movable to form other, more complex symbols to emulate ASL hand and finger movements (Simply rearranging the internal objects/elements in the desired position will produce the necessary symbol.)
